In order to upgrade to 10.2.x, 10.3.x, or 10.4.x you will need to purchase the appropriate installer package. Major system upgrades are not issued as free downloads. Jaguar and Panther (10.2.x and 10.3.x, respectively) are obsolete versions. Tiger (10.4.x) is the current version and can be purchased from the Apple Store online or from any Apple retailer. Your machine must meet the minimum system requirements for Tiger:
1. A minimum of 256 MBs of installed RAM.
2. Built-in USB and Firewire ports.
3. At least 6-8 GBs of free space on hard drive.
4. Any firmware update required must be installed. Firmware updates must be installed while booted directly into OS 9.1 or higher.
You may find available copies of Jaguar and Panther at http://www.applerescue.com.
Because you are using 10.1.x you should first backup all your personal data to an external backup drive. You should then boot from the OS X installer disc from which you will be installing a new version. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menubar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer (or Utilities) menu. After DU loads select the desired startup drive from the left side list, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window, set the desired number of partitions (usually one), set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click on the Partition button. After the new volume appears on the Desktop select the volume from the left side list, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), click on the Options button. Select the Zero Data option (one pass) and click on the OK button, then click on the Erase button. This process will take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size and speed of the hard drive.
After the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with the installation of OS X.
After you've successfully installed the new version of OS X you will need to update your third party software to be sure it is compatible with the currently installed version of OS X. Most software you used with 10.1.5 will no longer be compatible - this includes any proprietary printer drivers (drivers not installed as part of OS X.)
